Rural Catholic schools confront teacher shortageAs students and teachers settle in for the 2014-15 school year, some administrators are trying to solve a problem vexing Catholic schools across rural dioceses.
There’s a shortage of qualified teachers, according to Tim Havican, principal of Holy Rosary Catholic School, Medford.
“What we’ve found here is we have a really hard time attracting good candidates,” he said.
New principal for Hudson schoolPeter Noll, the education director of the Minnesota Catholic Conference since 1999, has been hired as principal of St. Patrick School, Hudson. Prior to his time at MCC, Noll, who holds a doctorate in educational administration from the University of Minnesota, worked as a principal for five different Catholic schools throughout Minnesota and as the curriculum director for the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis.

New principal at home with school, restructuring
On the afternoon of June 10, the new principal of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School, Ashalnd, was moving boxes. Betty Swiston, who took over the position June 1, has more than 30 years’ experience working in diocesan schools. A Bayfield native who graduated from UW-Superior’s elementary education program, she started out at Cathedral School in 1982, then moved to Holy Family, Bayfield, for 14 years. Swiston was then hired as the principal at St. Louis, Washburn, where she served for 12 years before joining the staff at Our Lady of the Lake. With five years’ experience at OLL and master’s degree in educational administration, she arrives in time to lead the 125-year-old elementary and middle school’s transition from single- to multi-grade classrooms.
Priest uses anniversary to support
Catholic educationOn May 25, the cluster parishes of Our Lady of Lourdes, Dobie; Holy Trinity, Haugen; and St. John the Evangelist, Birchwood; celebrated Fr. Dave Oberts’ 45th ordination anniversary. Parishioners organized a celebration after Mass at St. John; in lieu of gifts, Fr. Oberts encouraged his flock to donate to his favorite charities. More than $3,000 was collected and will be distributed to St. Joseph Catholic School, Rice Lake, and Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School, Ladysmith. Fr. Oberts was ordained May 24, 1969.
Mystery readerBishop Peter Christensen was the mystery reader for Amy Hockenbrock’s second-grade class Friday, May 2, at Cathedral School. Before reading Anthony DeStefano’s “The Sheep That No One Could Find,” the bishop answered students’ questions about his clothes, his job and his favorite sports team (yes, he likes the Packers).

Principal hired for Park Falls SchoolA Park Falls native with more than a decade of teaching experience will be assuming the duties of principal at St. Anthony Catholic School, Park Falls, in June. Fr. Shaji Joseph Pazukkathara, pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, has confirmed Steven Eitrem’s appointment as principal. Current principal Michael Plemon is retiring at the conclusion of this, his fourth year in the position.
